Global Engineering Excellence: The Role of Engineering Education Research Dr. Jack R. Lohmann
Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
Abstract
As we witness a world that is rapidly transitioning to one increasingly characterized by transnational institutions and multicultural communities and driven by accelerating technological advancements, there is a growing international concern about the global capacity of engineering programs to produce a well-prepared engineering workforce of the future able to deal with a growing list of complex and interdependent challenges. Once again, many are calling for major reforms of engineering education. This time, however, a more sustainable and transformational approach is appearing in the form of the emerging discipline of engineering education. Since the vitality of any discipline depends on the vigor of its community of scholars and their dedication to the advancement of knowledge through research, assuring sustained global engineering excellence depends critically on building the global capacity for scholarly research in engineering education.
